Rehabilitation Through Photography (RTP) is a wonderful New York-based non-profit organization that traces its roots to the 1940s, beginning with an effort to use photography to help wounded WWII vets restore their lives and sense of self. Today, after a number of recent challenges (including the death of its long-time leader), RTP is moving into the 21st Century, and currently runs 25 programs in different settings to provide over 200 hours of photography instruction per week to programs that include those for homeless and recently homeless people, people with cerebral palsy, and communities for developmentally disabled individuals.

Dean of NYI, Chuck DeLaney, and Student Advisor Chris Corradino recently visited RTP's program in East Harlem and posted a little youtube video to show what they found - a joyous photography class!

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1) RTP really needs digital cameras. We're not talking about the latest DSLR. Any used point-and-shoot digital model of recent vintage (say 4-megapixels or more) would get very good use, I promise. If you watch the video, you'll see Eugene is going to try to record the Harlem club scene with a single-use film camera. Let's get him (and lots of other students in those other programs) a digital camera! My guess is a bunch of you have an older point-and-shoot model that's been replaced with a newer, fancier one, or a DSLR. Don't let that old camera sit in the corner. Donate it and feel good. Again, visit http://www.rtphoto.org/ and follow the directions.

and/or

2) Make a small donation to RTP. It's easy to do through paypal by going to http://www.rtphoto.org/ and clicking on the donate button. Even a dollar or two helps, because foundations and corporate donors are very impressed with donations from individuals that show broad-based support for a non-profit organization.
