Tracing the Light: Imagery before Photography
June 14, 2010 through June 17, 2010 at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops 2010 series.

Explore the era just before the dawn of photography, which supported a culture of skilled portrait makers who saw the benefits of both light and lenses. Participants will each make their own 19th-century-style portable camera obscura and ribbon-tied folios to keep. Then they will have the opportunity to use their own cameras, a tent camera obscura and camera lucida to make drawings in the formal gardens at George Eastman House

1839: Processes of Daguerre, Talbot and Bayard
July 19, 2010 through July 22, 2010 at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops 2010 series.

Use the same techniques and chemicals used by the original inventors and celebrate the state of photography as introduced in 1839.

Dawn of Photography
August 9, 2010 through August 13, 2010 at the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock Abbey.
Part of the Photography Workshops 2010 series.

Combine a vacation trip with a very special workshop in rural England this summer: Learn the process of photogenic drawing at the birthplace of negative/positive photography—at the locations used in the Harry Potter movies.

This workshop is co-sponsored by the Fox Talbot Museum and hosted by Roger Watson, curator of the museum.

How to Identify and Preserve Historic Photographs: Part I, the 19th Century
October 16, 2010 through October 17, 2010 at George Eastman House.

Dating photographs is not an exact science; it’s done by recognizing cultural clues combined with an understanding of the technical process used to make photographic images in different eras. Combined with tips for preserving vintage photographic images, this is a fun and informative workshop that demystifies an otherwise very difficult job.

The Platinum Print: History & Technique
November 13, 2010 through November 14, 2010 at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops 2010 series.

Unlock the mysteries of coating and printing the most archival of metal-based photography with master platinum printer Ron Cowie. This workshop includes learning how to make negatives with the most effective density range for platinum and palladium printing papers. Participants will also examine masterworks of the George Eastman House collection produced by William Willis, Alfred Stieglitz, Alvin Langdon Coburn, Paul Anderson and others.

Home Publishing: Digital Albums, Calendars and Greeting Cards
Saturday, December 4, 2010 at George Eastman House.
Part of the Photography Workshops 2010 series.

Guided by Museum staff, participants will be encouraged to unlock their creativity and design holiday greeting cards, merging text with images. Participants will also learn ways to create archival photo albums using digital and printed out photographs, with inspiration from historic and contemporary examples from the Museum’s collection.
